What is a Computer Virus?
And how to protect your computer from Viruses.

A
Computer Virus is so named because it performs just like a “real” virus. The virus enters your computer system, replicates itself within your computer, and damages vital files or systems, or can even send your computer's sensitive information to others.
The level of sophistication in a computer virus can range from a simple program that will target specific file types to intricate masterpieces of hacking technology that will help themselves to your address book before attacking your computer. The later can pass themselves on to your family and friends in the guise of a friendly email that looks like it's been sent by you! This tricky email virus can explain how your computer might become infected, even if you are taking care never to open attachments from anyone you don’t know.
The simple truth is that opening an attachment without checking it for a virus is almost always dangerous. Certain downloads might contain
Spyware (programs that search your computer for personal information and transmit it) or other harmful viruses. Hunting down a free download of your favorite song may cost a lot more than what you counted on if it is paired with a harmful virus!
Ever since there have been computers, there have been hackers that love nothing more than getting through the latest level of computer security. Some of the best hackers in the world are actually employed by the security software companies in order to test the latest protective technologies.
One of the best defenses that you can have, though, is common sense and regular maintenance. This means that you should be extra careful what links and downloads you click or attachments you open. You should also have an antivirus program on your computer, such as
Norton Antivirus 2008, which you run at least once a week to make sure that your computer is “clean.”
Like human illnesses, a computer virus can put a severe crimp in an otherwise perfect day. Take care with your online usage and make sure to make regular scans of your hard drive if you are active online. Also remember to update your antivirus program often and keep your subscription up-to-date, since hackers are always on the cutting edge of internet technology. Computer viruses can be annoying, but with common sense and a good antivirus program they can be warded off.
