PRO's:
Intelligent firewall handles program control without bothering users. Powerful antivirus is as effective against spyware as the best standalones. Better interface, smaller performance hit than previously.

CON's:
Real-time antispyware allows low-risk spyware until reconfigured. Optional privacy and parental control features less flexible and powerful than previously. Antispam misses too much.

BOTTOM LINE:
The NIS 2009 firewall, antivirus, and antispyware all offer world-class protection. Optional antispam, privacy, and parental control modules are relatively weak, but that's better than having the strong antispam and weak antispyware of ZoneAlarm. And I love the firewall's silent but lethal program control—no popups!

In internal performance tests both Norton AntiVirus 2009 and Norton Internet Security 2009 delivered significant performance enhancements in year-over-year product comparisons in the areas of memory usage, boot time, scan speed, user interface (UI) launch speed, and HTTP download speed. Additionally, Norton Internet Security 2009 outpaced the industry average results in performance tests against nine competitive Internet Security products. Key findings from the internal product performance review include:

Less Memory Usage – Size of working set memory for Norton Internet Security 2009 is only 10-15MB — approximately 2-3x less than the competitors’ average
Faster Scans – Norton Internet Security 2009 runs a full scan on a 1GB file set in 2:15 (mm:ss) —faster than the average scan time of 2:49 (mm:ss) for tested competing products. Scans 30-35% faster than Norton Internet Security 2006
Faster Boot Time – The average boot time impact for tested competing products was 20 seconds —Norton Internet Security 2009 impact was only 14 seconds. Systems boot 5-10% faster than with Norton Internet Security 2006
Faster UI Response – The user interface in Norton Internet Security 2009 launches in under 1 second (following initial launch), about 2 times faster than the competitor’s average
